The Thugs met in Brighton in 2002 after drunkenly agreeing that music at clubs should never be progressive, dull or pretentious. A few pints later and the pair realised their shared interest in broken beats, rapping and heavy basslines and they began combining their musical tastes and talents. Playing hip hop, funk and beats the duo gained a reputation as party DJs across Brighton and they held their own residency at legendary Brighton subterranean bar ‘Ali Cats’ where they held weekly parties, hosting names such as JFB (UK DMC champion), Cut La Roc, Ashley Slater (Freakpower), Bushy, Kidda, Flevans and a host of local VJs.
Production was the next logical step and the thugs set out on what was to become a lifelong passion. Churning out their own tracks and remixes to play out, the pair experimented with all genres but felt most at ease with breakbeat – the combination of its broken beats and heavy basslines was ideal. They were taken under the wing of breaks maestros NineLives The Cat and Vlad Sokolov and learnt the tricks of the production trade. It wasn’t until later meeting fidget supremo The Bulgarian that their love of house music began and things really started to take off.
2 Bit Thugs smashed onto the emergent fidget/electro house scene in 2008 with their genre-crushing blend of shit-kicking beats, apocalyptic elastic bass lines and trademark hip hop influences. Never taking life too seriously their distinctive 'gangster house' sound received critical acclaim, support and hype from numerous international blogs, DJs and press; making them amongst the hottest producers & remixers in the scene right now. Always keen to stay one step ahead of the game the 2 Bit Thugs now bring their trademark style to all genres of music. Too hard to pigeonhole the pair have freed themselves of being tied to any scene, and their tracks range from Baltimore bangers through 2 step, to low-slung hip hop.
Their first two releases stormed the DJ Download charts and got the duo recognition across genres, as did their highly successful 'Re-Rub' series – a collection of free unofficial remixes – which also gained support from festival headlining DJs to bedroom hobbyists. Always keen to promote free music the Thugs are currently working on a highly anticipated free net label project so keep your eyes peeled!
Now much in demand as DJs, the duo's full-throttle bass assaults have left dance floors nationwide drooling. Never afraid to push the music they love, regardless of pigeon holes, the pair bring a raw energy to their DJ sets – mashing up womping and wobbling basslines from drum and bass to house, from hip hop to garage, baltimore to dubstep - all blended with quick mixing and super sick edits.
2009 promises a packed release schedule with tracks and remixes with Atomic Hooligan, Stupid Fresh, DJ Deekline, The Bulgarian, Calvertron, B Rich, Rico Tubbs, The Death Set and Kelevra to name a few. The 2 Bit Thugs discography is growing rapidly, with labels worldwide clambering for a slice of the Thuggery. When not spending their time remixing some of the scene's hottest names the Thugs are in the studio working on a full artist album that promises to be a blend of styles from lush, string-laden downtempo through grime, house, rock, drum and bass and beyond.
With the hype machine in full force throughout 2008, this year looks set to go interstellar as the 2 Bit Thugs continue their sonic barrage and dancefloor massacres, leaving a trail of carnage behind them.
