A mixture of forward-thinking alt.rock, ambient electronica and energetic post-hardcore. Formed in Summer 2011, Atlas : Empire began as vocalist/guitarist Steven Gillies (ex-The Ocean Fracture) and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jamie Sturt (OYD, A Coalescence Cascade, This Silent Forest). Steven and Jamie had worked together before in various projects, but never as the primary creative force. Taking ideas that Steven had been working on since the demise of his previous band and re-writing/developing them - in the space of a few weeks they had written a handful of songs, ranging from ambient electronica to dynamic post-hardcore. It quickly became apparent that more musicians were required to give these songs the scope they demanded, this led to Dave Stephen (A Coalescence Cascade, ex-The Vandelays) joining the band on bass, vocals and also taking the reins as co-producer. The band drafted in Paul McArthur (Salo, ex-The Ocean Fracture) as temporary drummer and made their live debut in August of 2011. They then began recording and self-producing their debut EP, while starting to look for a permanent drummer. Through recommendation from a mutual friend, Steven got in touch with drummer Jonny Gormley, who at that time was playing in alt. rock band Southpaw, emailing him work-in-progress mixes. Jonny officially joined the band a week later, after just one rehearsal. The remainder of that year saw Atlas : Empire play a handful of gigs in various Glasgow venues, honing their craft as a live band, whilst constantly writing new, more progressive material. In January 2012, the band enlisted acclaimed producer Chris Gordon (Song of Return, Pareto, Lightguides) to mix and master 4 of the songs they had recorded, entitling the EP 'To the Astronaut..'. Soon after, Atlas : Empire were featured on Ally McCrae's BBC Introducing radio show, as well as several independent radio shows and blogs. In March they comissioned Ayrshire-based media company Black Pepper Studios to shoot a promotional video for EP closer 'Who watches the Watchmen?' and also Ohio's Three Bears Design to create the artwork for 'To the Astronaut...' March also saw a new addition to the band, former Pareto and Sucioperro guitarist Dave Aird, expanding their sonic horizons even further. In April, Atlas : Empire will release 'To the Astronaut...' online through various digital retailers and begin tracking their first full length album. http://www.facebook.com/atlasempire
