Dann Penn and Spooner Oldham were the godfathers of Southern Soul. They wrote many of the songs that were big hits for the Muscle Shoals Studio on the Tennessee River in Alabama and were involved in the formation or this prestigious studio. Their songs were recorded by artists such as Percy Sledge, Dionne Warwick, The Sweet Inspirations,Charlie Rich, Etta James, The Ovations, Solomon Burke, Arthur Alexander, Jeanne Newman, Art Freeman, Tony Borders, Sandy Posey, James Carr, The Box Tops, Ted Taylor, Tony Joe White, Arthur Conley Ronnie Milsap, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, Irma Thomas, The Wallace Brothers, Barbara Lynn, Tommy Roe, Joe Simon and others. They stayed mainly behind the scenes for the most part but are accomplished artists and great performers in their own right.
