After spending ages attempting to shoe horn his musical tastes into easy to swallow genres, Tom gave up trying and now lets it flow naturally. The results can be heard in everything from his collaborative efforts with indie soul-boys Hard-Fi to more experimental beat workouts and off the cuff song writing. As a producer and recording artist he takes elements from a variety of DIY styles including punk, hip hop, reggae and garage, not to mention grandiose forays into psyche and prog rock or cheapo dancehall and synth-pop, mashing it all up to make music which has been described as sounding like early stones if they had samplers, or Ian Dury Jamming with Smiley Culture after listening to the entire 2 tone catalogue. On top of his genre defying output Mr Tom also satisfies his purist leanings with a studio one influenced side project Stoneleigh Mountain Rockers and his free jazz collective the Devotional Ensemble. Every so often he stops to enjoy a cup of tea before knocking up a beat for long term cohort Sarah Wayne.
Wrongtom knew he didn’t fit from an early age as he flicked through his big sister’s post punk records while the other kids were reveling in polished pop, apparently when you’re last in the line of a decade and a half worth of offspring raised by a south London mum and a Calcutta born dad, you don’t expect to fit. Add to this the extended family which saw Tom being brought up by 3 generations including his ragtime pianist granddad and you start to get the dislocated picture.
Growing up on the outskirts of London no doubt helped, with one of the worlds most culturally diverse cities on the doorstep and some boisterous bumpkins in his backyard Tom endeavored to see more of the world than his local under-funded Library and community center could offer. With aspirations to be a film maker Tom fell in to the world of music making by accident, joining a band as a vocalist in his teens “for a laugh” which achieved little more than getting their college band night banned, then quickly turned his hand to Latin percussion. The production element came last as Tom began gathering up any bit of musical kit he could get his hands on in varying states of disrepair and gradually built up the rag tag studio he affectionately dubbed the correctional facility; a name which seemed apt considering a handful of his ne’er do well mates spent some time in at least one in their formulative years.
While all this was going on Tom was also busy DJing left right and center and building up his record collection ready to inflict it on anyone willing to listen, from sold out thousand strong arenas to whoever’s in the passenger seat of his car (Tom drives a lot as he doesn’t drink), oddly he still considers himself more of a music lover than a musician.
