Dubcherry are a band from Birmingham, England, established when "The Dubstitute" met Helen Bentley. Attracted by her English sound, he quickly recruited her to embark on a project that had been on his mind and hard drives. Initially the focus was a series of contemporary dub tracks. Helen developed lyrics and melody lines, incorporating unusual but sweet ethereal harmonies. A number of other ideas were brought to the studio, and worked on various ideas in sound spanning genres such as hip-hop, soul, electronica and more dub. The fusion of sounds they like, and Helen’s explorations in words and poetry resulted in more tracks in the mix, like ‘Same Old Same Old’ - a firm favourite. They started work developing a live project, recruiting the rhythm section of Derrick Simmonds on drums, and Bobby McCallister on bass. As the repertoire developed, they recruited a new member on keyboards and backing vocals, Mari Peterson which brought another dimension to the sound. Mari had to return to her native city of Oslo bringing rise to singer Bev Robinson and keyboardist Leeming Hoey. Bev, singing soulful harmonies as well as her own number, and Leems armed with a Korg and FX pedal complete the Dubcherry outfit. Dubcherry's live set is uniquely original, sometimes blending audio with visual, with new ears stopping to listen and new eyes taking notice. A performance for sight and sound. Born and bred in Birmingham, Dubcherry regularly perform in local venues such as The Yardbird, Hare and Hounds and were regulars at Sam Redmore’s Freestyle night at The Bulls Head. Dubcherry opened The Yardbird Stage at the Mostly Jazz Festival 2013, and were invited to the BBC Radio Mailbox Studios to record a festive set for BBC Introducing West Midlands. Dubcherry like what they like, are writing and rehearsing more material, and are greatly influenced by all the sounds and music that have moved them. We hope you feel it too.
