Since starting out on various open mic nights around the city in 2008, Coventry ‘Songbird’ and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Emma McGann has made her music known to many in the Midlands and beyond. Awarded StudyvoxFM Musician of the Year 2010 by none other than Kylie Minogue and announced Band of the Month, June 2010 by BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Introducing, Emma continues to strive for success in her musical career after graduating with a degree in Music Composition in two years time.
‘Fantastic!’ – Kylie Minogue
‘Emma McGann has sweetness, with an edge ;)’ – Nancy Sinatra
Claiming influences from Katy Perry, Imogen Heap, Ellie Goulding and Suzanne Vega, Emma is one of very few around the Midlands to have really grasped onto the genre of pop in all its glory. With some promising gigs in the pipeline and a passion for performance and songwriting, these influences list a few examples of what Miss McGann aspires to become.
‘Her songs are little slices of pop magic. Interesting lyrics and song structure that are full of surprises without being too complicated.’ – Steve Jones, aka. Stylusboy
Talking about her debut album ‘Start the Show’, Emma says ‘I’ve always felt that the way I write a song should change every time. I don’t necessarily write lyrics and then music, I’m never in the same room or environment from which I wrote a previous song. I’ve found that changing your method of writing each time keeps things fresh, generates more ideas and keeps writers block at bay.’
‘Indeed the album is an offering to the god of the catchy chorus and to the Lord of clever songwriting’ – Pete Chambers, Coventry Telegraph
As well as being an active musician Emma continues to do charity work, events management and promotion in and around the city, promoting other local artists at live music nights and organising events such as ‘Bank Holiday Lovin’ & the ‘Aardvark Acousticka’ for the charity ‘SoLo’ & organising the acoustic stage at ‘Covfest 4’ in aid of the ‘Telegraph Snowball Appeal’. In Jauary 2009 Emma also began hosting ‘Songbird’ a weekly showcase for local artists which still runs every Monday at the Phoenix in Coventry.

‘Whether speeding down the M69 to the site of paranormal activity or enjoying a particularly wet Jacuzzi Emma McGann’s powerfully hip music manages to make my eyes water with a mixture of pleasure and wild hysteria. Her new album ‘Start The Show’ is more than a collection of songs it is the cataloguing of audible ear chocolate that I will happily snarf down like a whale at a shrimp disco. It isn’t everyday that you can say with absolute certainty that a performer will become a star but Emma McGann is anything but everyday, she is the next big thing’. – Flint Angel: Paranormal Detective
‘A talent that cannot be under estimated and a voice that should never be muted. Emma has the ability to deliver stylish popular music in an innovative and provoking manner, in simple terms, she makes you want more.
From the first few notes to the final, melodic lyrics of ‘So Long’ we found ourselves on a journey, one that was constructed with detail, and brought to life by our highly contemporary pop princess’s vocals.
Emma McGann brings hope to an industry that has for many years been deprived of true talent. Her innovation and stylised approach lead us to believe that she won’t have long to wait until everyone has the pleasure of listening to ‘Start The Show’.’ - CIC Magazine
