"a record that's diabolically good in many respects ... its complexity ensures that it is most certainly an opus that rewards the listener ... clearly the devil really does have all the best tunes" - HOTPRESS
With two EPs under their belt, this band has left a sense of anticipation in the air with their live shows as of late, with fans always wanting more. And 2010 saw the band return to the studio to record their debut album with long time friend Owen Lewis, who has worked with such acts as REM, Flogging Molly, Hole, Snow Patrol, Paulo Nutini & more. After what initially was to be a quick recording process, had stretched out to 5 months. But time was not an issue, because when it comes to your first album, you can only do this once. Now after months locked away behind closed doors, perfecting every last second for the armada of songs that is their debut album, entitled The Devil In Music.
Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters from Limerick City, is made up of four gentleman; Ronan Mitchell (vocals/guitar/keys), Morgan Nolan (guitar/vocals/keys) Shane Serrano (drums/vocals/clarinet) and Sean O’Mahony (bass/vocals). Despite their ages, they have many years experience in the world music scene, churning out music to the masses, from punk rock and metal to traditional Irish. In late 2006, after years of touring with their past bands, they found themselves together in a practice room, collectively-minded, agreeing that they had exhausted their current projects.
Undefeated and heavily inspired, they created Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters; a rock and roll band with a seductive and gloomy sound, ignoring all trends of the current music scene. A band with a long and varied list of influences that blend and create songs from unstoppable head bopping to horror harmonies and sublime silence.
In 2007 they burst onto the Irish music scene after recording 8 tracks in the home studio of Owen Lewis (We Should Be Dead, Seneca, Windings & more) and released their debut self-titled EP on their own label later that year, to tremendous critical acclaim. With instant hit songs like ‘Delorian Obsession’, ‘King Amongst Fools’, ‘Little Black Marble’ & the spine chilling epic that is ‘Darker Shade Of Blue’ they toured relentlessly, playing headline and support slots across Ireland in some of the best venues with some of the most respected names in the music business from home and overseas such as Hayseed Dixie, Steriogram, Director, Giveamanakick, Ojos Rojos, Gang Green, David Geraghty (of BellX1), Concerto For Constantine, Walter Mitty & The Realists, Ham Sandwich & many more. The highlight of the year was when they were asked to open for American veterans Against Me! on the only Irish date of their ‘New Wave’ Album World Tour.
After a relatively “quiet” year in 2008 while doing a selected amount of shows across the country, FJBH spent the majority of their time in the practice room writing songs and perfecting their live show. 2009 saw them release their second, highly anticipated and critically acclaimed 5 track EP entitled ‘Congress of Oddities’, featuring songs of a wide eclectic genre and variety, from stadium-worthy anthems such as ‘Walking With The Dead’ & ‘Care To Play?’, to the morbid circus imagery of ‘Cornelius T. Ampersand’, sublime acoustic sounds of ‘Firefly’ and bluegrass country grunge (and their first radio single), ‘Homeward Bound & Gagged’, which after three days of its release in June 2009, went onto number three in the Irish download charts, and was immediately called “One Of The Best Singles Of The Year” by Alan Jacques of Limerick’s Live 95FM, and later went on to receive the number 13 slot for Best Irish Singles of 2009 in the their end of year radio show.
Late 2010 saw the Limerick four piece go into hiding, only to emerge months later with a strong 13-track long player which they are more than proud to call their own. Taking elements of their pile driving punk rock roots from their first self-titled EP, and mixing them with the haunting quirky and weird of their Congress Of Oddities EP, The Devil In Music is a mature and diverse album which is set to mystify and satisfy.
The albums first single release came in the form of the highly praised ‘Thread The Needle’ – which sets the scene for the forthcoming album’s title. The single features an arrangement of musical notes to form a chord known as a tritone. In the Middle Ages this grouping of notes was frowned upon and in some cases banned for its demonic and evil sound, and thus was nicknamed ‘Diabolus in Musica’ – Latin for The Devil In Music.
Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters released the long-awaited LP 'The Devil In Music' on May 20th 2011.
