Halflight

Halflight is a group from Cardiff associated with indie pop and alternative rock. The name has been used by two bands: one active from 2003 to 2009 and another active from 2010 onwards. The earlier line-up later becomes Paper Aeroplanes.

2003 to 2009

Halflight begins at the end of 2003 after Sarah Howells’ previous band, Jylt, comes to an end. The group includes bassist and singer Nia George, who is also Howells’ best friend. George is diagnosed with leukaemia and dies at the age of 21, and Howells continues writing and performing afterwards. The band supports acts including Johnathan Rice, Jonah Matranga, Jim Noir, James Morrison and Sandi Thom.

Later name change and releases

In 2009 the band changes its name to Paper Aeroplanes. Under that name, it releases the debut album The Day We Ran Into the Sea in 2010. The Halflight discography includes Subside EP, Pick Me EP and My Disguise EP.

2010 onwards

A later London-based alternative rock band also uses the name Halflight and is active from 2010 onwards.
