Jamie Mallender is a busy multi-instrumental session player, singer/songwriter and composer from Sheffield in the UK. His main instrument is the bass guitar and he is best known main as bass player for Tony Martin, the former Black Sabbath vocalist, for whom he has played since 2005. He endorses Fret-King Basses, Hartke amplification, Rotosound Strings, Musicman Bass Guitars, Snap-Jack Cables and Danelectro Cool Cat Pedals. Although best known as a rock bass player, Jamie has performed with artists from just about every concievable style of music and is currently busy recording instrumental music for film, tv and video games, as well as some vocal tunes for a future release.
In 2007, Jamie felt that it was time he recorded an album of his own. Having spent many years being in other people's bands and playing everything their way, getting told what to do, Jamie wanted to do it his own way. He started recording some songs, and put a few demos on MySpace, when a record company contacted him to say they loved the music and would be interested in putting out an instrumental record. Jamie had never thought of making instrumental music, but thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. The track, "Return To Bass" was the first thing Jamie wrote, and suddenly a whole new world full of creative ideas and possibilities became Jamie's obsession, which led to the recording of a wonderful album. However, work for other bands and projects delayed completion of the record - until the Tony Martin Band 3 month USA/Canada tour was cancelled at the last minute, summer 2009. Jamie returned home to his family with no work and no money, went into his studio and finished the album. It may be that this added a certain extra fire to the last couple of tracks added to the album.
Having a critically acclaimed album, one might expect Jamie to continue to release albums in a similar style. However, on 1st December 2010 Jamie released a taster from the forthcoming "Tunes From The Mothership" EP, "Slip Away," is a download only single, available from all the usual digital download sites. Jamie, "It's been just over a year since "Return To Bass," and I really didn't want to wait this long to put out another record. I love recording and I have a lot of music in me, I just need the time to put it down on tape! I've been singing a lot whilst I've been working with Eaglesque this last 12 months and this has got me back into the singer/songwriter thing. So I've decided that as soon as i can, I'll put out an EP, 3 vocal tunes (one of which is a cover of one of my favourite songs) and 2 instrumentals. The EP will be called "Tunes From The Mothership," and Slip Away will be track 1. I'm releasing the single version of it now as a download only, as a little taster and to keep the fans awake!"
With Tony Martin, Jamie has performed in Russia (including a show at The Kremlin where he was awarded an ambassador for peace medal,) Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Italy and Hungary. He has appeared on the same bill as Whitesnake, Foreigner, Tony Iommi, Bonnie Tyler, Glenn Hughes, Rik Wakeman, Uriah Heep, Nazareth, Jeff Scott Soto, Eric Martin, Ten, Hardline, Bob Catley, Y&T, Ripper Owens, The Animals, U.D.O., Vixen, DORO, Raven, In Flames, Helloween, Pretty Maids, etc... Jamie has performed in Poland many times as session player to Polish pop artist Zenon, has also worked with Zal Cleminson of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Steve Roberts of UK Subs, Graham Oliver from Saxon, John Verity from Argent and can sometimes be seen swapping bass for guitar - playing for 60's legend Dave Berry (Crying Game.) Jamie's regular band is called EPIC, a UK touring 100% live 3 piece harmony band that performs classic hits from The Eagles, Joe Cocker, Small Faces, Doobie Brothers, Travelling Wilburys, Turtles, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Killers, Kinks, Kings Of Leon and many more. This is a quote from Jamie's website:- "In a time where most live bands are not actually live at all, and your heroes mime their hits on stage even though you've just spent your weeks wages on the ticket, and many bands have lots of extra instruments and voices on a backing track to "enhance" the sound, EPIC will take you right back to basics and prove that it was better when things were a bit more real. The band will take you through impeccable performances of many of The Eagles' greatest hits, and other classic big harmony guitar based rock. See Also - www.myspace.com/epicliveband"
His favourite bass players are - Billy Sheehan, Bob Daisley, Bootsy Collins, Doug Wimbish, Duff Mckagan, Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes, Jaco Pastorius, Jeff Berlin, Jim Lea, John Deacon, Laurence Cottle, Marcus Miller, Michael Anthony, Neil Murray, Paul Mcartney, Phil Lynott, Stanley Clarke, Stu Hamm, TM Stevens and Victor Wooten.
