Jess Hall
Jess Hall is a British folk singer-songwriter based in Oxford. She grows up near the coastline of North Devon and later moves to Oxford, where she writes songs about love, life, and the contrast between her coastal background and the inland city. Her work is described through clear vocal delivery and imagery that draws on coastal themes of love and loss.
Career
Hall begins writing songs shortly before moving to Oxford, then establishes herself on the local music scene over the following years. She supports acts including Sea of Bees and appears at Truck Festival. She also headlines the Shh Stage at Wilderness.
Releases and recognition
Her debut EP, Red Jumper, leads to attention from Oxford music press, with one review describing her as one to watch on the local scene. Her debut album is released in February 2014, with a sold-out launch performance at the Holywell Music Room in Oxford shortly beforehand.
Other act with the same name
Another performer uses the name Jess Hall: a singer-songwriter from Llandrindod Wells who sings in English and Welsh, plays piano and harmonium, and performs with Noel Doak. That artist releases the EP Glas Oren in 2014 and is associated with BBC Introducing recognition on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru. A separate listing also names Jess Hall as the front woman of the Jess Hall Band, also called Colour the Atlas.
