Kick Back (born Ty Yakiwchuk) is a beatmaker from Edmonton Canada, born on April 10th 1989, now residing in The Netherlands.
The first 10 years of his life were spent near the city of Vancouver, where he was first introduced to the hip hop culture by some older family friends who were like brothers to him. These 'brothers' were much older, in their late teens, and were constantly involving themselves in the hip hop culture one way or another. From graffiti, to skateboarding, to vinyl records, to hip hop shows like Yo! MTV Raps & Rapcity, all these things eventually helped KB learn what hip hop was. Being so young at the time, it was hard for KB to fully understand and percieve what the music side was, to him it was just something his 'brothers' loved and he looked up to them as role models so it stuck with him.
Growing up his parents always had lots of vinyl laying around and he can even remember messing up his pops record players because he didn't know how to use them properly. There was a certain record from the 60s that had a drum break on it, and as a kid he liked the sound so much he would just spin the record backwards to hear the same loop over and over again, ruining the vinyl. He was unaware of that fact that he was diggin for breaks before he even realised what hip hop was, how it was made, or what tricks were used to find certain sounds. He also got a cheap kepboard for xmas one year with a percussion section and a loop function where he would just sit there all day constantly pressing the loop button on a 2 bar drum loop of a cheap toy keyboard.
In 2001 Kick Back moved back to Edmonton where he met new friends who were already hip hop heads. The years would pass and his affinity for the cutlure and his vinyl collection would start to grow rapidly. It wasn't until 2006 where he started to make beats himself after a friend found a music program and put it on his computer. For the next 6 years KB would make beats with this software as a fun hobby, and in 2010 he started to promote his music online after he decided to take it seriosuly.
Fast forward to 2011, when Kick Back started to gain interest from Da Shogunz and chemistry began to form. After realizing that they had very similar talents, aspirations, and goals, Kick Back was asked to join the crew and move to Holland. In spring 2012, he moved to Holland and started to learn the ways of hardware beatmaking, with the help of his fellow Shogun beatcats. Kick Back is now 100% hardware & vinyl.
Straight out of a big, hip hop-crazed high school and a small local teen rock scene in Madison, WI comes Kick Back. In 2005, Steve-o Wilkes, Tony Sanchez and Michael Cooper shared a common goal: bringing rock back into the ears of teens. Today, they continue to pursue their goal and are doing it in style.
Spring 2010 marks the release of their self-produced debut album titled Hometown Hijinks. Their unique artistic outlook on life is evident in their music. They're known for energetic live performances that blast straight up, in-your-face rock music with nothing to hide.
The band wants their listeners to enjoy themselves, be it by rocking out, breaking things, singing along, or as their name suggests, kicking back.
