Malavita hail from the San Francisco Bay Area, and write and perform in a wide variety of musical styles. They are a three piece band consisting of Tim Garry (guitar/vocals), Ivan Ganchev (drums/vocals), and Nick Mastroianni (bass/backing vocals). Their music traverses a wide variety of musical landscapes, including Rock, Jazz, Blues, Latin, Surf, 80’s pop, and Metal.
This is a band with two faces: one as a wild and crazy cover band, and one as band who writes and performs its own unique, eclectic music. At times, these two sides of the band meld into each other: during a set of covers, an original piece might be thrown in, or conversely, during a set of original material an out-of-context-yet-hilarious cover song might pop up. Still, their real passion is for their original material. Their first album, “Better Than Satan!”, contains speed metal, a tango sung in Italian, Dick Dale-like surf, sambas, jazz, and strange yet intriguing “Math Rock” compositions. This wide-ranging stylistic journey is no gimmick – Malavita are rabid fans of music, and enjoy nothing more than challenging themselves to create interesting and compelling compositions in any genre that strikes their fancy. Perhaps, at their heart, Malavita are a metal band; but they are a metal band that’s not afraid to stretch the limits of what metal bands have traditionally don, ignoring trends and the constraints of “genre”. In any case, listen to the music, and enjoy!!
