An unexpected craze of energy comes hurtling full force from the stage and you once again feel the tingle of excitement in your gut that you remember having a long, long time ago when music was fresh, RAW, enthusiastic and energetic! This is the sound of Ming Ming and The Ching Chings.
With their Debut Single released July 2009 through Badly Built Records the band are already gathering a pack of hungry for-more-followers eager to feast on the tunes the band describe as a hybrid of Rockabilly, Devious Disco and Psycho Pop!!
The Single - lead track “Show Off” and featuring B-side “O.U.T in the West of Scotland” – was recorded and produced by Thomas McNeice (El Presidente / Gang of Four) and boasts influences such as The Fall, The Cramps, ESG, 70’S Theme Tunes and Elvis Presley.
Ming Ming (Vocals/Guitar), Chet (Percussion/Sax), Davie (Drums) and Gee (Bass) have an obvious mischievous magic on stage and certainly know how to cause a stir in the somewhat boring play-by numbers music scene.
The band played their first gig at the end of 2007 in Bar Bloc, Glasgow. Since then the band have been asked to play Glasgow’s legendary Optimo Club held at the Sub Club; King Tuts Wah Wah Hut and various club nights around Scotland.
As part of the Glasgow International Art Fair 2008 Japanese artist Tomoko Takahashi requested a collaboration with the band. The band in turn wrote a piece of music which she learned and re-interpreted over 3 weeks. The results were documented in a video piece and live performance at SWG3. This lead to an invite to perform at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in December 2008 as part of an Art Exhibition curated by John Millar titled ‘Sawing off the branch I’m sitting on.’
In February 2009, the band won the Scottish Arts Council funded “Your Sound” contest in the infamous King Tuts Wah Wah Hut. They were one of the sixteen artists selected from 1400 bands to play the T-break stage at T in the Park 2009, headlining the stage on Friday night. One of their tracks was chosen for the T-Break advert, shown on the ‘Jumbotron’ screens over the duration of the T in the Park weekend on the NME and MAIN stage. They also featured in the Converse Music ‘New Blood’ section, featuring up and coming bands selected by the public. The band have also had tracks featured on an Art/Goes/Pop compilation CD and the SFA3 Strummerville Charity Album, which lead them to an invite to play in Madrid.
Their most recent ventures include Be@Proud Galleries in London, where they successfully played to over 700 people, a Future Of The Left support slot and progressing to the final 20 in The Red Stripe Music Awards 2010.
“Show Off” has received nationwide airplay on Radio 1, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio 6, XFM, Subcity Radio, RADIO magnetic, and have had track featured on Jim Gellatlys New Music Podcast and played by stations further afield in Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
Monday 31st May sees the band release a new 5 Track EP titled “Not In Anyone’s Gang!” through their label Badly Built Records. The EP will be available through download and also as a Limited Edition CD.
