What is Northcore?
A music band involving Carl Gibbons (producer, composer, performer); Jana Tillotson (composer, performer, lyricist) and a bunch of other talented performers and collaborators. For a long time Northcore was just Carl, and most of the stuff written was techno, trance and chillout. Now it’s more of a mix.
About Carl
Born in Denmark and grew up in Melbourne. Early influences were Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre, got sucked into Melbourne’s early techno/rave scene when it broke. Inspired by the “rave chill ” music of The Orb and Pete Namlook, Northcore started to include beats and chunky basslines in my ambient tracks. With the support of local labels and radio including Kiss FM and Green Ant Records, Carl made some noise through live gigs, radio live sets, and releases on compilations. He also did some more commercial dance stuff under the name Little Loki which was released worldwide and got national airplay in Australia.
Techno and Psy-Trance
The Melbourne psychedelic scene is where Northcore got cosy - three releases on Green Ant records in the space of three years, annual gigs at Rainbow Serpent Festival not to mention Earthcore. Carl also put on the Dark Forest with the Kronik Krew in the Aussie bush.
Future Projects
Right now Carl is working up full-length albums for the U.S. ambient label Spotted Peccary, and he has also been getting cosy in the London psy-trance scene. To date Carl has had two tracks released on UK psy-compilation albums with a few more on the way, and he has played psy chill gigs at big and small venues, including the Glade Festival, Waveform Festival. During my time off I like kiting, breakfasts, cycling, and making coffee.
