Portasound fuse soaring melodies, driving rhythms and wonky riffs to create genre defying instrumental electronic. Their highly charged live performances take you on a sonic journey with every unexpected twist moving the room from to psychedelic wash to dance-floor filler. Unafraid to mix up their sound, fans of Holy Fuck, Three Trapped Tigers, Fuck Buttons and Metronomy are in for a treat.
Biography
As a 3 piece they were championed across the country by John Kennedy, Rob da Bank, Tom Robinson and Huw Stephens who, after hearing their remix of Late of the Pier, invited them to Maida Vale for an exclusive BBC Radio 1 Introducing session. Gathering blog hype from their singles and love for their live shows they were soon playing the length of country and beyond. From London’s club scene to a host of festivals including Secret Garden Party, SWN, Sheffield Tramlines and Standon Calling and across Europe from gigs in Paris to an Italian tour.
With 2 years of gigs sharing the bill with bands like Metronomy, The XX, Friendly Fires, Three Trapped Tigers and Two Door Cinema Club, the band were ready to consolidate their successes and refocus their energies.
At the end of 2010 three became five as Portasound welcomed two new band members. Thom 'House' Ellinas, multi-instrumentalist and Graham Gaffney.
The band are in the studio until 2012.
How it came to pass
Once upon a time, or so the legend goes; It was a sunny July 21st and brothers - James and Michael Dow - were on their way to meet Luke Bell and some other mates in an old shack somewhere in the English countryside. They wandered into the same charity shop they often did, on this most mundane of walks to the station - just to see if the old, confused owner had updated her box of dead peoples’ eye wear. She hadn't. However, there, glimmering in the dusty corner of the room, partly obscured by a tangled web of coat hangers, was a Yamaha Portasound; un-boxed, un-new, missing an F Sharp and with no instructions or batteries. They took it immediately and promised they'd give the 'assistant' in the corner a pound on their return. She agreed and Portasound was born.
Praise for Portasound
“With hot whistling and building grooves, synths and casios are king in Portasound’s world. They turn the glum into fun and make pop hot again, which is just as magic live as it sounds on this compilation” – Huw Stephens BBC Radio 1
“The theme from the best computer game or TV show that never got made” Rob da Bank BBC Radio 1
“I don’t know what exactly is is but i very much like it” - Mark Riley 6Music
“If this track is anything to go by they could be destined for pretty big things. It takes the twisted melodies of Gyratory System and affixes them onto a Bloc Party kind of song structure before sprinkling with Metronomy dust and mincing the whole thing through a digital wringer.” - NME Magazine
“Frantic basslines and 8-bit disco wig outs mark Portasound out from the electro crowd. Add to that infectious melodies and a very wierd pikey shanty vibe and you’ve got the most exciting UK synth act since Metronomy” - Kruger Magazine Ones to Watch
