rastermusic/noton is a label cooperation for electronic music based in germany. in 1999 both artist labels rastermusic and noton.archiv für ton und nichtton merged and the foundation stone for a co-work uniting sound and art design with strong attention to scientific sequences was laid down. rastermusic was founded by olaf bender and frank bretschneider in 1996. the main interest was to present repetitive minimal-music following the direction of pop. since 1996 the label released cds with a serial design conception focusing on the specific aesthetics of digital sound manipulations. noton.archiv fuer ton und nichtton was founded by carsten nicolai more as a platform for conceptional and experimental related projects in music, art and science. after the publishing of the still ongoing clear series in 1996 the idea for a conceptual cd magazin occured and was finally realised as the 20`to 2000 series on raster-noton between 1999 and 2000. since then olaf bender and carsten nicolai together have been running the label raster-noton as a platform for innovative digital music.
