After being expelled from various schools, arrested and nearly driven insane by LSD, Rotating Leslie were born. Three friends from school, Greg, Adrian and Dan, went on a journey of discovery in their formative years which saw them DJ at illegal raves, get carted off in Police vans and almost lose their minds in East London squats. The only way out was to turn their backs on the scene they had immersed themselves in, move to a farmhouse in the countryside and form a band.
Here, with brother and bass player Stuart, they released a limited fanbase album 'Infrequent Mild Peril' - a collection of demos which sold out of it's 1000 copies in a matter of weeks. Copies are now exchanging hands for £20 on ebay!
One year and three drummers later, they recorded their debut single 'Fire!Fire!'. Put out as a self-funded, limited-edition, signed 7" at the end of the summer, they quickly sold out the 500 pressings in Rough Trade, Pure Groove and HMV in the first week, and received airplay on London’s XFM, Virgin and BBC 6. Also with the help of thousands of downloads they were named BBC London’s band of the week by Gary Crowley (The first DJ to play on London’s 104.9 XFM!).
The video for the single, which was filmed for nothing in their front garden, is currently being playlisted by MTV2!!
They have gained a large and loyal following from ‘Woodendstock’, the annual free festival at their farm, and their incendiary London warehouse parties and extensive gigging over the last 12 months. This has seen them support The Paddingtons, Dogs, The Rifles, Queens of Noize, The Boxer Rebellion, 65 Days of Static and Goldie Lookin Chain to name but a few.
This summer they headlined the Isle of Wight Festival New Band’s Stage and played the Secret Garden Party. Filled with the same passionate energy as their music, the live shows are just as infectious, with festival crowds singing along with songs they’ve never even heard!
NME described their sound as 'gritty, harmonic, art pop'; call it what you will, they have steered away from the obvious indie clichés and instead, relied on their diverse influences from 80’s metal to electro house and created something fresh and exciting
Constant song-writing from the band is bringing a stream of new material and with their second single due for release in the new year, the Leslies are starting to turn a few heads.
2007 is already looking good for the boys. The Subways supported them at a secret hometown gig, Fire!Fire! is on the cover of Playmusic Magazine in January and they played with The View at the launch of E4's new show Skins. Things are definitely looking up!
2008 - Quite honestly the best set of songs written and performed by any band in the last couple of years. This band shows the music business to be the blind, crippled animal that it is. Won't someone get this band where to they deserve to be? Don't underestimate the 'Sparrows Tear' factor...
