Rough Fields is the operating name of James Birchall, an electro-acoustic composer and electronica producer from the United Kingdom. Based in Manchester, Birchall works across lofi, noise, folk and experimental music, bringing together strands of folk, classical, rock, minimalism, electronica and electro-acoustic composition.
Style and approach
Rough Fields uses found sound and manipulated everyday objects as part of the music. The project includes cardboard box kick drums, controlled pop-bottle explosions, household implements and doctored electronics, alongside other unusual sounds. It combines these elements into a lo-fi and experimental approach that links Birchall’s different musical interests.
