Sketchbeat were an alternative funk rock four piece with a sound that has been compared to a fusion of 'Queen, James Brown and the Chilli Peppers' (thelondonpaper). Xfm described their live stage show as ‘explosive’ built around trumpet riffs, guitar hooks, piano, punchy drums and four part harmonies. The band was born when Uni mates Ed Webber (drums) and Paul Daron (vocals) teamed up with Mike Spencer Chapman (trumpet) and Rich Cummings (bass) in November 2005. The four got to work blending their favourite styles - rock, funk, jazz, hip hop and even drum ‘n’ bass - to create a distinctly different sound. The four-piece won a National a Battle of the Bands competition in August 2006. During 2007, they were voted in the top four Best Live Bands by the London public out of over 200 artists at the Indy Awards - London's live music awards. Unfortunately the band split amicably in January 2009. Lead singer Paul Daron should be continuing with future projects.
