The Black Seeds
The Black Seeds are a dub, reggae, funk and soul group from Wellington, New Zealand. Formed in 1998, they remain active and are associated with the New Zealand dub/reggae scene. Their recordings are released on Sonar Kollektiv.
Style and line-up
The band works with a large rotating line-up of around eight to ten musicians, with vocals, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, bass, drums, bongos, keyboard and woodblock among the instruments used. Their sound combines dub, reggae and funk into a funksteady-soulsteady style.
Albums and notable songs
Their debut studio album, Keep on Pushing, appears in 2001, and Dust and Dirt follows in 2012. The song “One By One” reaches an international audience after being used in Breaking Bad.
Members and related projects
Named members include Mike Fabulous, Bret McKenzie, Nigel Patterson and Barnaby Weir. Lead singer Barnaby Weir is also linked with Flash Harry and Fly My Pretties. Bret McKenzie is also a member of the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords.
