Four guys in their early 20’s sat side-by-side on a forest green couch talking music and haphazardly tossing around a bag of Tostitos. Most of them grew up in nearby towns from one another, passing each other in the high school hallways and at the local movie theatre, but this was the first time they were discussing their craft and the reality of going in an exciting new direction as a band called The Revue.
You could say The Revue began with a Facebook chat between songwriter and vocalist Brian Kapler from Island Def Jam signed band Permanent Me and Rob Rudkin, a talented drummer from Long Island. But in reality, the site where time goes to die was only responsible for physically bringing them together. The seed for The Revue had been germinating for a long time before that and it was only a matter of time before this foursome joined forces to create a catchy pop sound with a soulful twist.
The band members’ paths crossed at times at Long Island shows but it was their separate experiences and personal growths that really brought them together as star-crossed musicians in October 2010.
Kapler toured extensively around the U.S. and Canada with Permanent Me playing numerous dates with bands like Fall Out Boy and New Found Glory. When the band disbanded in 2008, he took some time out, dabbling with other bands, but mostly focusing on finding himself.
“It wasn’t until recently that I found a sound I wanted to move forward with,” he said. “And once I found that, I wanted to get other musicians together to make it happen and get different musical perspectives.”
And different perspectives he received. While Kapler was touring the U.S. with Permanent Me, Matt McAuliffe and Anthony Polzella , who can usually be spotted in a Rolling Stones t-shirt, had a world of experience all their own. For the past three years, both McAuliffe and Polzella have been in the band Ready Jet. They’ve played around New York City and Long Island and released a 9-song E.P. At the same time, Rudkin was completing a master’s degree in business, while playing around Long Island with local bands.
Talent and fate combined to bring the four of them together at just the right time in their lives. But their collaboration is no coincidence. It was only possible after each musician found their own sound through their own experiences. And now, with The Revue, it’s more about getting back to basics in order to move forward.
“We’ve come together to begin a new chapter in our musical careers,” said Rob while reclining on the sofa and stuffing an 80’s styled pillow under his neck. “We’re going to collaborate on new ideas and record as soon as we can.”
The Revue's self titled E.P. will be released on iTunes and at their website therevue.bandcamp.com on June 7th!
