The Starlets (USA) The Starlets were a 1960's girl group that recorded for the legendary Chess label. The group started out as The Lovettes, before changing to The Gems. Dorothy Hucklebee, the lead vocal of The Starlets was a constant member though Vadine Harris and then Minnie Riperton were the main voices of the earlier incarnations. The Starlets (USA) The Starlets were formed in Chicago in Illinois in early1961. Members Jane Hall, Maxine Edwards, Mickey McKinney, and Jeanette Miles. On April 24, 1961 "Better Tell Him No' entered Billboard's Pop charts and began steadily rising, finally peaking at number 38. It lasted two weeks on the R&B chart, reaching number 24.
