Twisted Pear was formed in the summer of 1996 by two technicians who shared the same passion for music. Derek Mason was born in Burton upon Trent, England. He learnt to play the piano at an early age and has been writing and performing music ever since. Alan Hoose was born in Staffordshire, England, and since leaving school became a Computer Technician. He grew up with a very open view of music and an enthusiasm for technology.
During the spring of 1999 Twisted Pear released their debut 11-track album, 'Peeled'. It was written over a two-year period as both members of the band were in full-time work. Derek Mason, the founder of the band, was a Computer Programmer; Alan Hoose an Infrastructure Technician. All work, from writing the songs to producing the CD, was done in-house by the band. Additional vocals were produced by Clare Peaty.
The debut album received praise from the likes of the UK's top music magazine Future Music (where it received a glowing review of 10/10 in Issue 83, and was featured on the magazine's cover CD in Issue 86), and BBC Radio One (who featured the title track 'Greenfruit' for 3 months on their web site).
“We accidentally sent the album to the wrong address when we sent it to Future Music magazine.” says Derek.
“It was reviewed alongside that month’s signed artists’ album releases. We beat Basement Jaxx into third place, and came joint-second with Moby’s ‘Play’ album. So we sent it again next month to the correct address, and our title track made the cover CD.”
2003 saw the release of Twisted Pear's second album, 'Wired'. The CD features 15 tracks written and produced over the past 3 years. Derek and Alan again wrote and produced all tracks. Additional vocals were provided by Kris Strama-Rolfe, Clare Peaty, Colleen (Proxima3), and 'bloke' chorus. Two tracks also feature Scott Styne on Guitar. Album artwork was produced by Alan Hoose, Derek Mason and Paul Fox.
“The debut album, ‘Peeled’ was mostly electronic / dance based tracks, whereas the new album, ‘Wired’ has a much wider range of styles.” says Alan.
“We’ve not turned away from dance though, but we’ve incorporated other genes such as Indie-style guitar and jazz influences. We use vocals a lot more on this album, so we feel that it’s stronger than the first one.”
The 'Wired' album is completed, and is available to purchase.
Through their knowledge of music and computer technology, Twisted Pear maintain a growing profile on the Internet with 2006 seeing a new web site released. Twisted Pear are currently working on new material towards their third album, the Arxspace soundtrack and The Bridge Out project.
They excel in creating several styles of music, including retro 60s / 70's fusions with groovy funky undertones, electric guitar / breakbeat tracks, chill-out ambient, and dance.
