Brisfest was born in 2008 after the sad demise of Ashton Court Festival. Ashton Court had run into financial problems and declared bankruptcy after three decades of entertaining and delighting the people of Bristol.
A group of local volunteers, determined to ensure the survival of a not-for-profit music festival in the city, began building support to create a new event that would showcase the best Bristol had to offer. From the outset it was agreed that public participation would be one of the key aims with involvement open to all.
Beginning in September 2008, with a new location in the city centre, the organisers actively sought feedback and public involvement to create a festival that benefited all members of the local community. And so, with overwhelming support from the people of Bristol, a charity was set up, £100,000 was raised and planning for a large-scale outdoor festival for up to 8000 visitors a day had begun! There were 14000 visitors in the first year and this grew to 25000 visitors in 2011. In 2012, having outgrown the city centre site, the festival moved to its "spiritual home" – Ashton Court Estate.
