Merthyr Rising is a music, arts and ideas festival that celebrates working-class culture and resistance at the birthplace of the red flag.
Held on the anniversary of the Merthyr Uprising in 1831, when workers from the town took to the streets to protest against low wages and unemployment, which ended violently when the British Army seized back control. The festival aims to be a celebration not just of music and culture, but of the town’s radical past, aiming to encourage political engagement amongst young people, all the more important in places like Merthyr, which for all its spirit, is usually overlooked by the powers that be.
Now in its fifth year, Merthyr Rising is one of the most politically engaging and musically exciting festivals in Wales!!
